A single mother’s perspective on parks

by Open.Spaces

“We all need to spend time in Nature to become full human beings.”

This was a comment by a single mother with one daughter during KQED Radio’s Forum program today – about State Parks and a possible upcoming ballot initiative to charge a fee to all of us – to help keep the parks open.  The basic proposal is to charge around $18 annually to all licensed drivers in the State of California.  Other general fees, such as camping at the parks, would continue.

Earlier in the program, an interviewee stated he was willing to pay more in usage fees, rather than see a single mother from Compton who didn’t visit State parks be charged an across-the-board fee so he could use the parks.

The single mother who called in said she was calling in response to that.

She and her daughter visit a State Park every year for a 2-week vacation.  This is what she can afford.
